Why I Consume Amla?

Health Benefits of Amla

regular health food store to get more, and they were out of it. In fact, they were reducing the size of their inventory, and Amla was one of the things they had discontinued selling. Even though I knew I could get it somewhere else, strangely, I felt a little sad. On the bright side of things, it made me appreciate how wonderful the plant is, and inspired me to write about it today.
I’ve been taking Amla off and on for about 12 years. It was recommended to me by my natural health practitioner, and it happens to be one of my favorite herbs. It’s very nourishing and rejuvenative; and I enjoy the effects it has on my body.
First, I’d like to say that before trying any new or unfamiliar supplement, you should check with a trusted health practitioner to make sure it’s right for you. I’d also like to let you know that I only recommend products that I feel are safe and I have experience taking. If I’m not sure of a product, or am unfamiliar with it, I don’t write about it or recommend it.
If you were to step into my kitchen or go through my cabinets, you would find a lot of the things I’ve recommended in articles. You’ll probably find a jar of coconut oil on my kitchen counter next to a little bottle of Vitamin D, and a box of tulsi tea. I sometimes have a bottle of Nucleotides on hand for cold and flu season (but unfortunately, I ran out recently). And I also have a bottle of Amla.
With that said, here are 10 reasons why Amla is so amazing:

1.) It’s an excellent source of Vitamin C:
Amla is a highly potent form of Vitamin C, and contains much more Vitamin C than is found in oranges.
2.) It enhances immunity

3.) It’s high in antioxidants.
Antioxidants prevent the body against free radicals. Free radicals are harmful and can damage cells, potentially leading to cancer and other possible diseases.
4.) It reduces inflammation.

5.) It is good for digestion, and helps the body to absorb and assimilate nutrients from the foods we eat.
Amla also reduces acidity. It’s a lot more slow and gentle than other herbs that aid digestion. For example, ginger is an herb/root used for digestion. It is a lot stronger and warmer than Amla. But don’t get me wrong, ginger is great for anyone who can handle it. Personally, as an individual who’s a bit more sensitive than most people, I tend to not have it very often. I prefer the gentleness and cooler quality of Amla.

6.) It strengthens the liver and helps us to flush out toxins.

7.) It’s great for the urinary system.
It helps flush out toxins through the urinary system without over-stimulating it.
8.) Great for the skin.
Whenever you see someone with a lot of skin blemishes or acne, often times it’s due to them having a liver overrun by toxins.        Since Amla helps to detoxify the liver and aids digestion (as well as being a good source of Vitamin C and other minerals), one of the results of taking it regularly is that it’s good for one’s complexion.
9.) Gives us healthier, more lustrous hair.
Since Amla is great for digestion, it makes it easier for our bodies to absorb the calcium in the foods we eat, therefore resulting in healthier hair (not to mention healthier bones, teeth, and nails). It helps us to preserve our natural, youthful hair color, and minimizes hair loss.
10.) Relieves menstrual cramping.
If you plan to take Amla specifically to get rid of menstrual cramps, you’ll need to start taking it at least a few weeks before menstruation in order for it to be in your system long enough to have an effect.

Amloki:Healing Properties

Regimental Therapy: Traetment without Drug

Regimental Therapy

As far as possible the Unani Physicians attempts to use simple physical means to cure a disease. But for certain specific and complicated diseases it applies special techniques. Some of them are enumerated below:

Fasad(Venesection)

In certain ailments it becomes necessary to resort to Venesection and this method of treatment has been found very effective in certain lethal diseases. Venesection is found useful for following purposes:
  • To correct the excess of blood and relieve high blood pressure.
  • Prevention of toxicity and accumulation of waste matters in blood.
  • Excretion of the waste matters from various parts of the body.
  • Stimulation of metabolic processes.
  • Cure of ailments due to ammenorrhoea.
  • Correction of hot material in temperament

Mahajim(Cupping)

  • This method of treatment is used for:
  • Cleaning the skin of waste matters.
  • To stop excessive menses or epistaxis.
  • To correct liver diseases.
  • To treat malaria and spleen disorders.
  • To treat piles, inflammation of testes and uterus, scabies, boils etc.

Tariq(Sweating)

This is the natural means of excretion. Waste matter from the skin, blood and from other parts of the body is excreted through sweating. It also reduces excessive heat.
Hot fomentations (dry and wet), bath with warm water, massage and keeping the patient in a room having hot air are some of the methods of diaphoresis.

Idrar-e-Baul

(Diuresis):

Poisonous matters, waste products and the excess of humours is excreted through urine. It is applied as a cure for diseases of heart, liver and lungs. Likewise in certain cases diuresis is affected by keeping the patient in a cold room and applying cold water.

Hamam(Turkish Bath)

This is required for:
  • resolving the waste matters and increasing sweating
  • providing light heat
  • increasing nutrition
  • increasing fat
  • decreasing fat
Cold bath is preferable in normal health. Hot bath is generally applied for the cure of diseases like Paralysis and muscular wasting etc, after massage.

Dalak(Massage)

Soft massage is sedative and relaxant; dry and hard massage is deobstruent and increases the blood supply while the massage with oil relaxes the muscles and softens the skin.

Kai(Cauterization)

It prevents the poison malignancy of one organ from transferring it to other organs thereby strengthening the organ having cold temperament. In the pain of hip joint cauterization is found very useful. The pathogenic matters which are attached to some structures are removed or resolved. It is also used to check the catarrhal matters from accumulation.

Ishal(Purging)

Purgatives and laxatives have been widely used by the Unani physicians for intestinal evacuation in certain diseases. This method has resolving, derivative, antispasmodic and detoxicating effects. The Unani physicians have laid down certain rules for adopting this method, compliance of which is necessary because this method has direct effect on normal metabolic channel.

Qai(Vomiting)

Emetics are used to cure headache, migraine, tonsillitis, bronchopneumonia and also bronchial asthma. This also cures mental diseases like mania and melancholia.

Riyazat(Exercise)

Physical exercise has great importance in the treatment of certain diseases, as well as in maintenance of healthy condition of an individual. It also prevents occurrence of certain diseases. Horse riding is useful for those physically weak and persons who have just recovered from an illness. Boating has been described as a means of cure for patients suffering from leprosy and ascitis. It is also good for stomach and strengthens digestion. The Unani physicians have laid down rules regarding hard, moderate and light exercises and have also indicated the timings and conditions for various physical exercises. The method of exercises of various organs of the body have also been described i.e. oration with raised voice is chest exercise, whereas listening to melodious songs and observation of beautiful sceneries are good for hearing power and eye-sight respectively.

Taleeq(Leeching)

To apply leeches is a unique method for removal of bad matter from the blood. It is useful in skin diseases i.e. baldness and ring worm etc. Certain conditions have been laid down by the physicians for applying this method i.e. the kinds of leeches to be applied, the water from which they are to be obtained etc.

Concept of Unani Dietics

Unani medicine lays great stress on treating certain ailments by administration specific diets or by regulating the quality and quantity of food. There are several books written by many Unani Scholars on this topic. Some of them are:
  • Manafe-ul-Atima wal Ashriba, by Rabban Tabari
  • Kitab fil Aghzia by Rabban Tabari
  • Tibb-al-Maluki Fil Ailal wa Ilajil Amraz Kulloha Bil Aghziya by Razi
  • Maqala Fil Aghziya by Razi
  • Kitab Manafe-Il-Aghziya wa Daf-e- Mazarreha by Razi
  • Fit Tadbir-al-Asehha Bilmakul Wal Mashrub by Hunanin Bin Ishaq
  • Kitab Aghziya-Tul-Marza by Najibuddin Samarqandi
In addition to nutrition properties several foods are capable of pharmacological actions too. For example many foods are laxative, diuretic and diaphoretic. Eggs are used as food for energy and externally used in fractures to relieve pain and to cure baldness. Sagu is good for diarrhoea.

The weakness of certain organs is corrected by administering the same organ of an animal by way of food; for instance, disorders and weakness of liver are treated by feeding the patient on liver. Likewise heart, kidneys and brain are administered in treating the ailments of these parts.

A Short Drescription of Unani Pharmacotherapy

Mizaj-eAdviya(Drugs Temperament)

The Unani medicine presupposes that the drugs also have their own temperament due to their special constituents.  Some drugs are composed of ingredients having opposite qualities, one quality acting in a way contrary to the other and these qualities are accommodated in two different parts of the drug. Ingredients possessing special actions are called active principles of the drugs. This theory of temperament of drugs is based on analogy and careful experiments.

Darajat-e-Adviya(Potency of Drugs)

Drugs are graded into four degrees according to their potency. In Unani system, drugs are used when the physical means and foods fail to cure a disease. Drugs of low potency should be used, as far as possible but according to the severity of disease, we may use high potency drugs. Drugs having greater potency are sometimes harmful. When a severe disease occurs and there is danger of complete loss of energies and life then drugs of higher potency can be used from the outset.

Mode of Action

The mechanism or mode of action of a drug can be explained only partially. For example glycerrhizea causes expectoration by relaxing and opening the passage of broncheoles but why it does so cannot be explained. However the Unani physicians have tried to explain it as follows;
The direct action of a drug is the result of its physical or acquired characters. Drugs mainly act by (heat, coldness, moisture or dryness.)
Some of the drugs have peculiar characteristics which influence the body when these drugs are administered.

Kaifiyat(Division of drugs according to quality)

  • Ist Group : This group contains drugs with hot temperament such as Musakhenat (Heat producing), Akkal (Erosive) and Mufatteh Sudad (Deobstruant) etc.
  • 2nd Group: This group contains cold drugs like Mubarridat ( refrigerents) , Radeat (Repellants) and Mukhaddirad (Anaesthetic) etc.
  • 3rd Group: Comprises Murattibat (moist drugs) and Muzliqat (Lubricants) etc.
  • 4th Group: These are dry drugs like Mujaffifat (Drying agents), Qabizat (Astringents) and Musaddidat ( obstruents) etc.

Action of Drugs on Particular organ

Actions of drugs n various systems or organs can be described in detail in the systematic pharmacology. Some drugs can act on peculiar organs only. For example the Anaesthetics act on the nerve-endings of sensory nerves.

Use of Munjiz & Mushil(coctive&Purgative

Coctive is used to prepare the matters for excretion through purging or other means of excretion.
This mode of treatment is used particularly for treating chronic or obstinate diseases. Purgative is used generally followed by coctive.

Dosage & Timings

While determining the dosage of a drug, factors such as temperament and potency of drugs, temperament and age of the patient, nature of disease, severity of the disease, route of drug, etc. must be kept in mind.
High potency drugs or severe purgatives and emetics should be avoided during summers and the severe cold weather. Different types of treatment are prescribed for different stages of the same disease. Some drugs should be used only when the stomach is empty such as anthelminthics while others should be used only after meals e.g. compounds of Iron. Mild action purgatives should be used at night and the sharp action purgatives in the morning.

Route of Drugs Usage

In addition to oral drugs Unani physicians also administered drugs through Huqna, Abzan, Farzaja, Shiaf, Zimad and Tila etc. The inhalation through inspiration is also useful in curing many respiratory diseases.

Forms and Shapes of Drugs Usage

Powders, Decoctions, Infusions, Distillates, Tablets, Jawarish, Majoon, Sharbat, Khameerajat, Bakhoor and Inkebab, Perfumes etc. are used to achieve the action of required active principles of drugs. Jawarish is used for stomach diseases and Lauooq for respiratory disorders etc.

Compounding and Correction of Harmful Effects of Drugs

The harmful effects are either corrected by simple methods or by compounding with other drugs, for example frying in oil decreases the irritant effect of the drug.
  • Drugs are compounded for the following purposes.
  • To potentiate the drugs effect (Synergism)
  • To decrease the harmful or excessive effect (Antagonism)
  • For sharp diffusion of the Drug
  • For slow diffusion of the drug.
  • For preservation of active principles
  • To increase the quantity of a drug.

Substitute of Drugs

In Unani system of Medicine substitutes are generally selected in reference to one or more actions when a drug is not available or is too difficult to obtain but as far as possible it is avoided.

Rhazes (925. D.) has compiled a treatise titled Maqala fil-Abdal-il-adviyah-fit-tibb-wal-ilaj on the subject of medicinal substitutes wherein he has described the laws of selection of substitute of a drug .

How Works Humors in Human Body?

The humoral theory presupposes the presence of four humors – Dam (blood), Balgham (phlegm), Safra (yellow bile) and Sauda (black bile) – in the body. The temperaments of persons are expressed by the words sanguine, phlegmatic, choleric and melancholic according to the preponderance in them of the respective humors – blood, phlegm, yellow bile and black bile, respectively. The humors themselves are assigned temperaments – blood is hot and moist, phlegm cold and moist, yellow bile hot and dry, and black bile cold and dry. Every person is supposed to have a unique humoral constitution, which represents his healthy state. And to maintain the correct humoral balance there is a power of selfpreservation or adjustment called Quwwat-e-Mudabbira (medicatrix naturae) in the body. If this power weakens, imbalance in the humoral composition is bound to occur. And this causes disease. In Unani Medicine, great reliance is placed on this power. The medicines used in this system, in fact, help the body regain this power to an optimum level and thereby restore humoral balance, thus retaining health. Also, correct diet and digestion are considered to maintain humoral balance.

Unani:A Short Description

Why  Unani Medicine Essential &Important?

The word 'Unani' is derived from a Greek word 'Ionian'. 'Tibb' means the knowledge of the state of the human body in health and illness. Unani medicine strives to find the best possible ways by which a person can lead a healthy life. The Unani system of medicine is one of the oldest and most acceptable systems of medicine practiced in India and in many parts of the world.Hippocrates practiced it over 2500 years ago.

Unani Medicine includes a great deal of ancient Egyptian medicine as well as important components of the ancient Mesopotamian traditions. Thus, it can be said that many aspects of Graeco-Arabic Medicine are even more than 6000 years old.Graeco-Arabic Medicine is being practiced as a traditional medicine in Europe, the Middle East and the Asian subcontinent. In the Middle East and in the Asian Subcontinent, Graeco-Arabic Medicine continues to serve millions of people as traditional medicine. Further, as modern medicine also originated from the ancient Graeco-Arabic medicine, hence new scientific concepts can readily be integrated into its practices. Thus, Graeco-Arabic Medicine has great potentials for the future health care.

The first physician of the system was Asclepedeus who established few principles of medicine.Hippocrates put forward the Humoral theory, which formed the basic framework of Unani medicine. His era marked the beginning of the Golden Period of the Unani system of medicine. He also initiated the concept of hospital and built the first hospital of the world in Hamas (Egypt) after travelling around the globe to find a suitable place.

Another renowned physician was Galen who played a major role in propagation of the system far and wide.A few important texts of the system include Kitab-ul-Hashaish (1st Century B.C), Kamil-Us-Sana (10th century A.D.), Canon of Medicine (11th century A.D).

The Unani pharmacopoeia Committee was constituted in 1964,consisting of Unani experts and scientist with a view to maintain uniformity in the standards of drugs and to prescribe standards for compound formulations and for identity, purity, efficacy and quality of the drugs. Pharmacopoeial Laboratory of Indian Medicine at Ghaziabad was established under Government of India to workout standards and drug testing for Indian System of Medicine at national level.Central Council of Indian Medicine, a statutory body was established for laying down standards and for maintaining uniform standard of education in the Indian System of Medicine including Unani and to regulate the practices in Indian System of Medicine.

In order to develop high standards of education and research in Unani Medicine at national level a National Institute of Unani Medicine has been established at Bangalore in 1983 in collaboration with the Govt. of Karnataka. In addition to these developments Central Council for Research in Indian Medicine was established in 1969.During 1978 these Council were bifurcated into separate Central Councils viz Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine which was established in 1979, with a view to initiate, guide, aid, develop, coordinate scientific research in different aspects of fundamental and applied Unani System of Medicine.

There are 11 Regional Research Institutes, 7 Clinical Research Units,1 Literary Research Units,2 Survey and Cultivation of Medicinal Plants Unit,7 Drug Standardisation Research Unit.At present, there are 31 Unani colleges in India offering graduate education and four colleges offering Postgraduate education.

Umoor-e-Tabiyyah (Basic Components of Life)

The human body is a complex structure comprising of seven Umoor-e-tabiyyah i.e. basic elements. These are Arkan (Elements), Mizaj (Temperament), Akhlaat (Humors) Aza(Organs), Arwah (Pneuma), Quwa (Faculties), and Af’aal (Functions). For the proper functioning of the body, all the above-mentioned components should be present and work in coordination with each other.

Ideology

The Unani System of medicine is based on the Humoral Theory. According to it,there are four humors in the body i.e. Dam (Blood), Balgham (Phlegm), Safra (Yellow Bile), and Sauda (Black bile). These are generated in liver by the nutrient components of the ingested food and liquids. There is a strong relationship between a body fluid and its associated humor, so any imbalance in a humor will also cause changes in the composition and properties of its associated body fluid.Health is a state of body in which all the humors are in equilibrium both in quantity and quality ,any alteration in the equilibrium leads to disease.Unani medicine describes the concept of Tabiyat (Medicatrix naturae),which is a supreme planner of the body , to create the healthy environment within the body and prepare to fight against the disease. If tabiyat is strong, then a man does not suffer from a disease easily, if it weakens, a man becomes prone to disease easily.

Essentials of Health

Unani medicine has also given great importance to the prevention of the disease and promotion of health than cure. There is an influence of surroundings and ecological conditions on health of human being. There are six factors, which are essential for the maintenance of good health called Asbab-e- Sittah Zaruriah. These essentials are as follows:

1. Hawa-e-Muheet (Fresh Air)

2. Makool-o-Mashroob(Food and Drink)

3. Harkat-wa-Sukoon-e-Badania(Body Movement and Repose)

4. Harkat-wa-Sukoon-e-Nafsania(Mental Movement and Repose)

5. Naum-o-Yaqzah(Sleep and Wakefulness)

6. Ehtibas-o-Istafraagh(Retention and Evacuation)

Diagnosis

Firstly, the practitioner takes a full case history. This has many aspects, but generally includes observation of the patient under 10 physical parameters of mizaj to determine the Mizaj of an individual.the physician also observes, the pulse (Nabz), which often takes a little time, as the physician does not just take the pulse rate, but also looks for subtle changes in the pulse that may indicate present or threatening health conditions. In addition, the practitioner may press reflexes and examine the urine (Baul) and stool (Baraz) of the patient.

Principles of Treatment

In Unani system of medicine, treatment is based on temperament and humors. In diseased condition, there is imbalance in body temperament and humors. Therefore, Unani physicians make all efforts for the correction of temperament and balance in humors. Every humor has a specific temperament as described earlier e.g. hot, wet, cold, and dry. So, the drug used for the treatment should posses an opposite temperament than that of diseased humor, resulting in normalization of temperament. A disease, which is cold in nature, can be cured by a drug, which has hot temperament.

Methods of Treatment

Treatment is divided into four parts:

1. Ilaj-Bil-Ghiza(Dietotherapy)-Treatment through Diet

2. Ilaj-Bil-Tadbeer(Regimental therapy)- Treatment through certain procedures, tools and equipments.

3. Ilaj-Bil-Dawa(Pharmacotherapy)- Treatment through Drugs/Medicines, which are of Plant, Mineral or Animal Origin.

4. Ilaj-Bil-Yad(Surgery)- Treatment through Minor /Major Operative Procedures.

Treatment depends on degree of variation from the normal healthy condition. Dietotherapy is advised if the variation is of low degree, but if the variation is such that Dietotherapy alone cannot correct it, then Regimental therapy is advised and in Pharmacotherapy drugs are used according to the stage of the disease. In addition, Dietotherapy is also advised along with pharmacotherapy as per the temperament of the disease to cure the disease in a short period, so, the disease can be cured easily. Regimental therapy and Surgery are also advised when Dietotherapy and Pharmacotherapy fail to restore the health of a patient.
